Racing at Assen with Iglesias and Conte who replaces injured Millan

WSSP300 | Dutch Round – Assen| Thursday 21 April 2022

A temporary new line-up for the Italian/Polish team that will see Davide Conte stand in for injured Millan at Assen, while the squad aims for the podium with Iglesias.

This weekend will see the SMW Racing team field a temporary new line-up at the ‘university of two wheels’ as it participates in round 2 of the WorldSSP 300 championship. Turin native and rookie rider Davide Conte will stand in for Alex Millan who has just undergone surgery after having sustained a right ulnar styloid fracture and a sprained left foot at Aragon. The 17-year old Italian will therefore spend the weekend getting to grips with both the world championship category and the technical, winding Dutch track. The Italian/Polish squad will be aiming for the podium at Assen with Inigo Iglesias, fortified thanks to a very strong performance during the opening round. The Spaniard was able to set the second fastest qualifying time at Aragon, just 0.042 of a second from pole, and played a starring role in race 2, crossing the line fifth and just missing out on the podium. Lying fourth in the general standings, he is currently the first Kawasaki rider in the fight for the title and so is keen to put together two strategic races in which to score as many points as possible. In his second consecutive year with the SMW Racing team, Iglesias is more prepared and in shape than ever before as he takes on the 2022 season.

The Dutch TT round will get underway on Friday at 09:45 (CET) with the free practice sessions, before the action continues on Saturday with Superpole at 09:45 (CET) and Race 1 at 12:40 (CET). On Sunday the warm-up will run at 09:50 (CET), followed by the second race of the weekend at 13:45 (CET).

Inigo Iglesias, #58

«Assen is a track I really like, one of my favourite circuits on the calendar, actually. It will be important to take another step forward and complete a good qualifying session in order to start well in both races. I’m really focused on the championship and am aiming to score solid points. We’re sure that if we work hard, podiums and a race win will soon come, but for now the team and I are focused on completing good races, our eyes on the title».

«Assen is a magical and exciting track where you really feel the passion of the fans. Our thoughts are with Millan who can’t be with us of course. His surgery has gone well, and we hope to have him back on board with us at Estoril. Davide Conte will replace him, a young Italian rider who’s making his category debut. We have a lot of faith in his potential. He will need to understand the world championship and the new category, but we’re sure this will be a great experience for him. With Inigo we line up as frontrunners, strengthened thanks to strong results at Aragon where he was often up at the sharp end and only just missed out on pole position and a podium. Already during Superpole we’ll know what kind of weekend to expect and we’re confident we can do well at the university of two wheels».
